House, Reykjavík

One floor through the whole house: the hallway, the inner hall and the rooms between them flow together as one continuous surface, without joints, thresholds or trims.

In short

Place
Reykjavík
Surfaces
Floor through the whole house
System
Powder microcement for large floors, three coats of lacquer

When the same floor runs through a whole house, preparation is everything. Every room was primed and meshed, and the floor laid in continuous passes so no line shows between rooms. The result is a calm, light floor that makes the house feel larger than it is.

The curved steel wall in the hallway meets the floor without a trim, and under the skylights the living texture shows best: the trowel marks and colour variation change with the light through the day.

For large floors like this we use the powder system, mixed with water and with very high compressive strength. The lacquer went on in three coats, because hallways are where a house gets the most wear.
